The Greek work "amethystos" can be loosely translated as "not drunken." Centuries ago, Amethyst was considered to be a very strong antidote against drunkenness.

African amethyst is known for it's beautiful deep, rich purple color.

Greek mythology tells a story of Dionysus, the god of intoxication. He was angered one day by an insult from a mere mortal and swore revenge on the next mortal that crossed his path. Dionysus created fierce tigers to carry out his wish. A beautiful young maiden named Amethyst was on her way to pay tribute to the goddess Diana.

The goddess Diana turned Amethyst into a statue of pure crystalline quartz to protect her from the brutal claws of the tigers. Feeling shame for his decision to destroy the next mortal to cross his path, the god Dionysus wept tears of wine in remorse for his action at the sight of the beautiful statue. The god's tears stained the quartz purple, creating the gem we know today as amethyst.

Other lore and legend of the amethyst gemstone include beliefs that the stone boosts the spirit and is an aid for meditation. The amethyst gemstone is said to have healing powers good for addictions, easing arthritis, headaches, brain imbalances, blood sugar levels and healing stomach disorders.
