Sapphire "gem of the heavens" is the official birthstone
for the month of September!
Sapphire, the celestial gemstone, has been treasured for thousands of years. The ancient Persians believed that the earth rested on a giant sapphire and its reflection colored the sky. Although the most famous and valuable sapphires are a rich intense blue, they can be nearly any color, including yellow, green, white, colorless, pink, orange, brown, and purple. A rare orange-pink variety, known as padparadschah, is even more valued than blue sapphire.
Because sapphires represent divine favor, they were the gemstone of choice for kings and high priests. The British Crown Jewels are full of large blue sapphires, the symbol of pure and wise rulers. When Prince Charles chose a sapphire engagement ring for Princess Diana, couples all over the world were inspired to use this colored gemstone in place of the traditional diamond.
Choosing a Sapphire:
Most fine sapphire on the market today comes from Sri Lanka, which produces a wide range of beautiful blues from delicate sky blue colors to rich saturated hues. Kanchanaburi in Thailand and Pailin in Cambodia are renowned for deep blue colored gemstones. The key to finding the perfect blue is to ensure the gemstone does not appear too dark or it will look almost completely black. Since Sapphire symbolizes sincerity and faithfulness, it is an excellent choice for an engagement ring.
Legend and lore of the Sapphire include beliefs that its powers include spiritual enlightenment and inner peace. Tradition holds that Moses was given the Ten Commandments on tablets of sapphire, making it the most sacred gemstone. Sapphire is believed to provide healing properties for colic, rheumatism and mental illness. It is also considered an anti-depressant and an aid to psychokinesis, telepathy, clairvoyance and astral projection.
